Q: In the case of a school closure, what will the distance learning experience be for students in Barrie's Middle and Upper School?
Per best practices in distance learning, it is likely students will spend more time doing independent work. Therefore, it is important that students organize and keep up with their assignments.
Q: Which technology platforms will my student use in the case of a school closure?
It is critical that our school understand if your house does not have access to reliable high speed internet so we can accommodate your child. As mentioned in my email on Friday, please take the High Speed Internet Access survey if you haven't already It has two questions and takes less than one minute. We will call families who do not enter their information in this format.
Q: If Barrie School closes, when would online learning begin for middle and upper school students?
Mondays No scheduled classes
Tuesdays through Fridays Students sign in for virtual class meeting via the platform Zoom at 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 12:30 PM* based on their usual schedule of classes.
*Upper School Electives will be delayed in their start, so teachers and students have time to adjust to the new platform. We will widely communicate the exact day students are expected to start logging in for Elective classes Tues-Fri at 2:10 PM. At this point, there is no required coursework for MS or US Athletics, but students and families should consult health and wellness resources on our COVID-19 Information and Preparation page on barrie.org, which will go live in the next few days.
**If schools close, we have to consider that many teachers will be at home with their own young children, which may affect their ability to run classes at certain times. If this is the case, teachers will post independent work or pre-recorded lessons either in the moment of class or soon thereafter. Thank you in advance for understanding should unforeseen circumstances arise. Q: What will students and families need to do to prepare for the possibility of school closure?
Q: How will Barrie be taking attendance during online courses?
Every course will have attendance taken for every online course meeting. Parents and guardians will be notified if there have been multiple absences from an online class.
Q: What if my student is falling behind on course-work and needs organizational help from their teacher or advisor?
Q: If I am a parent or student, how can I arrange a Zoom Education conference with my teacher?
Q: If my student has an identified learning difference, how can we utilize Director of Prep Learning Services Helen Mahoney as a resource to enhance their learning in an online format?
Q: What if a student has a technical problem?
Q: I am a parent and need to learn more about Zoom Education or PowerSchool to better support my students. How can I learn about these?
Q: What if a student is unable to attend class on that day via Zoom Education?
Q: What if a student has a question for the teacher or a class-related issue?
Q: What if a student's issue (related to classes) is unresolved?
Q: How can we all attend to our wellness now and in the case of school closing?
