At Barrie Camp, safety is our highest priority, ensuring that every camper can enjoy their experience with peace of mind. We continually assess and update our safety measures to address any potential risks and keep our camp community safe and well-protected. Our safety measures are divided up into five categories listed below.
Safety at Barrie Camp

General Safety
Walkie Talkie Communication
Security Cameras
Public Address System
There is a public address system throughout our campus. All indoor classrooms have a wall mounted speaker or land line phone speaker. All outdoor locations are near an outdoor wall mounted speaker. Speakers are tested numerous times throughout the year and can be used to alert staff to any situation that may occur.
Activity
Pool Safety
All lifeguards are fully credentialed through the Red Cross and have demonstrated rescue competence. The number of guards on duty is determined by the number of swimmers in the pool. Typically, three guards are on duty with an equal number of counselors assigned as “lookouts.”
Lower Campers (rising Pre-K and Kindergarteners) have a dedicated section of the pool. All campers going into grades 1 and up have their swim skills checked when they first arrive at the pool to assess skill levels and determine in which areas of the pool they may safely swim.
Archery Safety
Boating Safety
Health and Wellness
Nurses Office and Medical Staff
Two registered nurses or a nurse and Emergency Medical Technician are on duty during the regular camp day. Staff trained in First Aid are on site during extended day hours.
Our medical guidelines are created and reviewed yearly by the Barrie School Director of Health Services as well as the school's consulting physician. There are 4 AED's throughout the campus as well as multiple stock epi-pens.
A dedicated golf cart is reserved for the nursing staff to assist campers and distribute medications throughout our campus.

Background Check
Barrie Camp conducts four separate background checks on all prospective camp staff. These are done prior to allowing a staff member to work with children.
- FBI and State of Maryland Criminal Background Check
- Child Protective Services Check
- National Sex Offender Registry Check
- Maryland Sex Offender Registry Check
Training
Barrie Camp staff participate in a comprehensive week long pre-camp training program as well as meetings throughout the summer. During our pre-camp training, staff are given a detailed emergency procedures presentation and walk through of our campus. This presentation is updated yearly by Barrie School's long standing Emergency Response Team.
Weather
Heat
During high or extreme heat, most of our camp activities are adjusted to being indoors. The only activities we do our best to keep outdoors is swim, canoeing, and archery. When necessary to close the pool, pond, and archery range, we do have indoor locations available with adjusted activities planned.
All other activities have an indoor location to continue their programming close to or as normal.
Air Quality
Rain or Thunderstorms
Rain: In the event of rain, all activities are moved to their assigned indoor or outdoor covered location to allow programming to continue as close to normal as possible.
Thunderstorms: In the event of a thunderstorm, all outdoor activities move to their assigned indoor locations to continue programming as close to normal as possible. Swim, canoeing, and archery are unable to be indoors. Alternative programming is prepared in the event that those programs are unable to occur.
No campers or staff are permitted outdoors during an active thunderstorm until the all clear is given from the Director or Associate Director of Camp.
Monitoring the Weather
The weather is monitored by numerous members of the camp team throughout the day using local radar and hourly forecasts.
In advance of inclement weather, camp staff are notified. Prior to a thunderstorm, the Camp Leadership Team is dispersed throughout campus to assist with moving groups indoors and ensuring everyone remains indoors during a storm.
In the event of severe weather, announcements can be made using the campus wide public address system.

Barrie Camp has over 20 walkie talkies distributed throughout our Leadership Team, Nurses Office, the pool, and other select individuals. This allows coverage throughout our campus for immediate communication.
Barrie has more than 60 cameras strategically stationed monitoring campus activities at all times. Select individuals monitor the cameras throughout the camp day.
Archery specialists have completed an archery training program and must demonstrate instruction and safety competence. Additional safety measures include whistle announcements, safety lines, and extensive safety instructions with campers.
Boating specialists have completed a canoeing training program and
Throughout the summer, Barrie School counselors are on campus to assist campers or staff members who are in need of social or emotional support.
All potential staff must complete a thorough application. Our Staff Application asks questions about their background and history of working with children. The year round camp team evaluates every application to ensure all potential staff members meet the criteria to be working with campers.
All potential staff members must complete an in person or video conference face-to-face interview. Questions asked during an interview create a detailed background of the staff member while also gaining knowledge of why they want to work with children.
All Barrie Camp staff must have at least two completed references before they are eligible for hire. References can be from a professional or educational background. All references are reviewed by the year round camp team. Follow up calls are made to a reference if necessary.
Air Quality is monitored using AirNow and IQAir. When necessary, groups are moved into indoor locations if the air quality is not safe for them to be outside.
