Frequently Asked Questions

A: Barrie Camp is located in the Aspen Hill area of Silver Spring at 13500 Layhill Road, Silver Spring, MD, 20906. We are just over a mile from the Glenmont Metro Station, 1.5 miles from the Intercounty Connector, and a short drive from Washington D.C.

A: We serve campers from ages 3 ½ to 14 years old. Campers must be 3 ½ by their first day of Camp.

A: Yes. Barrie Camp provides bus transportation from pre-set bus stops around Montgomery County and North West Washington, D.C. We do not provide door-to-door service.

A: Morning drop off is from 8:30 am to 9 am. Afternoon pick up is from 3:50 pm to 4:30 pm. Campers engage in activities from 9 am to 3:10 pm. From 3:10 pm to 3:50 pm, campers are transitioning to dismissal and enjoying their end of the day popsicle!

A: Barrie Camp offers Extended Day services for campers who need to be dropped off before 8:30 am or picked up after 4:30 pm. AM Extended Day begins at 7:30 and PM Extended Day goes until 6. Campers who remain after 6 pm will be brought to the Camp Office for pick-up

A: We follow the American Camp Association’s recommended staff to camper ratios. For our rising Pre-K and Kindergartners, the ratio is 1 staff member for every 6 campers. For rising 1^st to 3^rd grade, the ratio is 1 staff member for every 8 campers. For rising 4^th to 9^th grade, the ratio is 1 staff member for every 10 campers.

A: Barrie Camp hires Counselors to supervise and engage with campers throughout the camp day. Counselors ages vary from high school to college students. All activities are run by college students or graduates and local educators who have a passion for the activity they are leading. Some activity specialists obtain certifications based on their specific activity.

A:  Barrie Camp strives to provide a safe and engaging environment for all. We provide detailed training for Camp Staff, including use of pronouns, gender identity, and cultural appreciation.

A: Campers of all ages participate in a wide range of activities. Our schedule allows for general day campers to experience 8 activities per day, including a lunch period, and two swim periods. All campers enjoy swim, sports, arts and crafts, canoeing, dance, drama, karate, outdoor living skills, and more! Campers going into first grade and above also experience archery and digital video production. 

Schedules change from week to week. Specialty and Super Camp campers participate in their specialized program for half of the day, with the other half of the day reserved for day camp activities, including a swim period.

A: Yes! Campers in our Specialty and Super Camp programs spend half of their day focusing on their program. The other half of the day they experience the different activities Barrie Camp has to offer!

A: Camp groups are based on the grade that your camper is going into. We do our best to accommodate all friend requests. Campers in different grades are unable to be in the same day camp group.

A: We recommend packing your camper with a water bottle, sun screen, bug spray, a change of clothes, and a backpack. More information about packing lists can be found in the Barrie Camp Family Handbook.

A: We are happy to offer a number of Open House events on the following Sundays from noon to 2 pm: January 8^th, February 5^th, March 12^th.

A: No. A camper’s enrollment in a Specialty or Super Camp program includes their Specialty or Super Camp and their day camp activities.
