Institute for Advanced Montessori
Studies
The Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a division of The Barrie
School, was founded in 1980 to address the extreme shortage
of certified Montessori teachers, and to share the unique
insights of two of Dr. Maria Montessori’s (the founder
of Montessori education) closest colleagues, Dr. Claude Claremont
and Francesca Claremont.
The Institute offers Montessori teacher education programs
that lead to several levels of the American Montessori Society
(AMS) teacher certification in Early
Childhood Montessori Education (ages 2.5–6), and Elementary Montessori Education (Elementary I: ages 6-9; Elementary I & II: ages 6-12).
IAMS offers a program that is co-sponsored with Trinity College
that offers students the opportunity to pursue a Master of
Arts in Teaching degree with a concentration in either early
childhood education or in elementary education. Students,
who are admitted to the program, receive graduate credit for
the successful completion of IAMS coursework. Additional graduate
level course work is required for the completion of the degree.
IAMS is an educational center for innovative curriculum development.
The Institute is committed to intellectual excellence in Montessori
teacher education. Montessori teacher education is a process
of facilitation, exploration, and growth. The program is rigorous
but supportive. We offer teachers the opportunity for Montessori
teachers to learn through a hands-on, discovery-oriented approach.
IAMS is located on the campus of The Barrie School in Silver
Spring, Maryland. The Barrie School has an enrollment of 420
students from ages 2 through 12th grade, with a Lower School,
Middle School, and Upper School. The Barrie Lower School curriculum
is based on the philosophy and methodology of Maria Montessori,
who supported the concept that all children have developmentally “sensitive periods” when they learn with the greatest
ease, fueled by their own curiosity and guided by observant
instructors.
