Welcome to The Barrie Camp
The Barrie Camp, located on the 45-acre wooded campus of The Barrie School, offers campers and their parents’ convenience and quality programming. The award-winning Barrie Camp in Silver Spring, Maryland, just minutes away from Washington, DC, has over 70 years of camping experience.
Barrie Camp looks much the same as it did when the Layhill “ranch” became our home in 1956. With woods, fields, ponds and a meandering stream, we have the perfect setting for a summer day camp. Visitors are always quite surprised when they arrive because the best part of the campus is tucked away off the main road. Once you are here, you feel like you could be a hundred miles from home. Our facilities include a pool, riding stables and an assortment of school buildings, including a full size gymnasium and black box theater. Our campus is our greatest resource and our greatest treasure.
The Regular Camp program includes a wide range of activities that can all be done on-site. They include swimming, riding or ponies, sports, nature, arts and crafts, dance or movement, music, creative dramatics and canoeing, archery, karate, cooperative games, and morning Flagpole. In addition, to certain age groups, we also offer field trips, overnights, and a counselor-in-training program. Some of our other programs are out-of-the-ordinary, like Detectives - an interpersonal skills program; Sign Language - the language of the hands; and Explorers - hands-on activities from around the world; and every summer we enjoy adding new things. Special Event Days are a huge Barrie Camp tradition and, as a whole, have become one of our most distinctive and exciting features. Returning campers often decide when they want to attend camp based on the special event days that will occur while they are here.
The Barrie Camp offers campers innovative on-site Specialty Camps designed to extend campers interest in particular areas. Barrie offers a Riding Camp, Digital Video Theater, Summer Stage, Summer Studio, Summer Sports, The Naturalists, Dance Camp, Karate Kids, and the Camper/Counselor-In-Training-Program.

The Barrie Camp offers eight weeks for campers to choose from, provides extended Supervision before and after camp, and Transportation by bus to and from Barrie in Montgomery County and DC locations.
