The Barrie Camp, located on the 45-acre wooded campus of The Barrie School, offers quality programming to campers and convenience for parents. The award-winning Barrie Camp in Silver Spring, Maryland, just minutes away from Washington, DC, has over 75 years of camping experience.
Barrie Camp looks much the same as it did when the Layhill “ranch” became our home in 1956. With woods, fields, ponds, and streams, we have the perfect setting for a summer day camp. Visitors are always quite surprised when they arrive because the best part of the campus is tucked away off the main road. It feels like you could be a hundred miles from home. The campus enables us to provide the kind of developmentally appropriate programming that kids really need in the summer. Facilities include a pool, riding stables, pavilions, and an assortment of school buildings, including a full size gymnasium and black box theater.
The Regular Camp program includes a wide range of activities, all of which can be done on site. They include swimming, riding, ponies, sports, nature, arts and crafts, dance, music, dramatics, canoeing, archery, karate, cooperative games, outdoor living skills, and morning Flagpole. For our older age groups, field trips, overnights, and the counselor-in-training program are also included. Additionally, we include some programs that are less traditional, like Indoor Cooperative Games - an interpersonal skills program; Sign Language; and Explorers - hands-on activities from around the world. Then, in order to make each camp season unique and special, we always add some new programs to the schedule. Finally, our full-blown Special Event Days are a huge feature of the camp program and highly anticipated by campers. Campers often decide to attend camp based on the dates of their favorite special event days.
The Barrie Camp also offers innovative Specialty Camps, designed to follow campers’ specific interests and to give them more time in one area. Programs include Riding Camp, Digital Video Theater, SummerStage, SummerStudio, SummerSports, The Naturalists, Karate Kids, and the Camper/Counselor-In-Training Program.

The Barrie Camp offers eight weeks of programming, morning and afternoon Supervision, and convenient Transportation service.
