Equestrian
Center
Barrie is the only day school in the metropolitan D.C. area
offering a first-rate on-site equestrian facility with an
equestrian program for pre-school children. Barrie’s
horse and pony stables are open to all Barrie students aged
four and older. While pony rides are incorporated into the
Lower School curriculum, formal lessons with highly experienced
instructors are also available to students five and up. All
Barrie equestrian activities emphasize responsibility, skill
development, safety, and a great appreciation for animals.
Horseback riding is both fun and therapeutic, and helps children
develop socially, mentally, and physically. Barrie equestrian
outings through the wooded campus trails are often the highlight
of a student’s week.
Each riding group of students has the opportunity to participate
in a horse show at the conclusion of the semester program,
and students are publicly recognized for their efforts. The
event is a non-competitive highlight of the group riding program
which parents, grandparents and friends are invited to attend.
Additionally, The Barrie School Riding Team, at the Middle
and Upper School levels, competes against nearly 30 other
schools in the area. In 2002, Barrie ranked in the top three
schools in the DC-metro area.
