Barrie’s Upper School prepares students for admission and success in highly selective colleges and universities while helping to instill a lifelong love of learning. The Upper School faculty encourages students to accept challenges and reach their fullest potential in academic pursuits and extra-curricular activities. Barrie Upper School students maintain high academic and ethical standards and are given strong support through individualized attention.

The Upper School curriculum offers in-depth studies of humanities, mathematics, the arts, science, and foreign language. Students also have opportunities to pursue a wide array of innovative electives, including high temperature chemistry, art and design, television production, philosophy, and wildlife biology. In their junior and senior years, students may choose from a variety of Advanced Placement courses.

Barrie graduates enter university life prepared to handle the academic rigors of the classroom and the new social environment of the college campus. They adeptly navigate the challenges in a changing world.

Students are expected to take at least five courses (six periods) each semester, and they must earn a minimum of 22 credits and perform 60 hours of community service to graduate. Extension Days, Community Service, Internships and Extended Study Week are integral parts of the curriculum. Colleges receive both transcripts.

With the exception of those who receive special waivers from the Head, all students must earn the following credits: Humanities (8 credits), Science (3 credits), Math (3 credits), Foreign Language (3 credits), Physical Education (2.0 credits), and the Arts (2.5 credits).
