The Middle School
The growth and development process that starts in the Lower
School continues as students enter Barrie’s Middle School,
which offers a stimulating and rigorous curriculum with unique
learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Expectations
for Barrie Middle School students are high, but careful attention
is given to the specific needs of developing 11-14 year old
students, allowing for the significant intellectual, social,
and emotional changes that occur at this age. The academic
program nurtures students to become independent thinkers,
resourceful problem-solvers, and lifelong learners.
Barrie emphasizes the humanities in its curriculum, a combined
study of literature, history, social science, and the arts.
Required courses include: humanities, math, science, foreign
language, art, and physical education.
The Middle School’s co-curricular activities include
Extension Days, Community
Service, Extended
Study Week, and Athletics.
These activities complement our core curriculum and broaden
students’ educational experiences. Our Advisory Program
ensures that each student has an adult advocate who takes
a special interest in all aspects of student life at Barrie.
Advisory groups meet weekly to discuss topics of particular
importance to young adolescents, and advisors also meet with
parents to discuss academic and social progress throughout
the year.
Class discussions, laboratory experiments, interdisciplinary
research and experiential opportunities form the basis for
learning in the Middle School.
